B&B Electronics Has Gone CART Racing.
And We Hope No One Notices!
CART, Championship Auto Racing Teams,
is one of the premier racing series in the world. B&B Electronics
is right in the middle of the CART racing action, but if we've
done our job right, hardly anyone will notice us!
The unobtrusive gray boxes in each race
team's pit area and the broadcast and working press areas
provide instant access to official CART timing and scoring
data and closed circuit TV. The boxes are part of a custom
data distribution network we developed and built for CART.
The new system is a ruggedized and weather-proofed
RS-485 data distribution network with multi-drop capabilities.
The pit and pressroom nodes are connected on a receive-only
basis. A built-in battery and charger provide power in each
box. Over a mile of cable carries the data.
One factor that caused CART to choose
B&B Electronics for this project was a very tight time schedule.
A purchase order was received March 29 for delivery of the
system in May. The engineering, printed circuit board design
and production, assembly and testing of 55 units were completed
in just six weeks!
According to race officials and race
crew members, the system was working seamlessly, as un-noticeable
as the gray electronic-packed B&B boxes that are its heart.

Replaces Expensive Imported Module
A serial communications board controlling
multiple coin receivers and turnstyles was giving the Los
Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority problems. Imported
replacements cost thousands of dollars and took months to
arrive.
An engineer at the contractor serving
the Authority was familiar with B&B and recognized the similarity
between the function provided by our 3PXCC4A Four-Port Serial
Card and the expensive, hard-to-get part.
Telephone conversations with B&B engineers
resulted in a customized version of our standard product that
replaced the troublesome part perfectly and saved over 80%
compared to the cost of the imported part! And delivery of
the first boards, including the R&D, took just three weeks.
Automatic Reboot Card Keeps Information
Flowing for Retail Kiosk
Big screen TV kiosks display news, entertainment
and advertising for retail locations. The display programming
is PC controlled. Occasionally a PC would lock up, as PCs
will, and the big screen would go dark until it was manually
rebooted.
B&B engineers suggested a variation of
our PC Watchdog Timer card. This card senses a locked up computer
and reboots it automatically, just as if the reset button
had been pressed.
Customizing our unit, B&B engineers provided
a board that withstands the retail environment and fit within
the budget of the manufacturer. Now the customized cards and
software are in every unit the company makes, assuring consistent
operation and satisfied location owners.
