I had nearly survived yet another New Year's Eve celebration when a fellow reveler asked me about New Year's Resolutions.
People in the business of tracking the inane say that 90% of people that set New Year's resolutions have abandoned them by spring. Turns out that the cause of failed resolutions is twofold; lack of written commitment and setting the bar too high.
Being a best practices sort of guy, here are my 2008 resolutions - in writing - with the bar set at an attainable height.
1. Visit more of you. I had some memorable trips in 2007. Solved tough problems, met great people, learned plenty. And most importantly, had some tasty dinners and an adult beverage or two. In 2008 I will see more of you. Don't hesitate to raise your hand if you think we could find enough things to talk about for me to justify my expense report. Important - If you're in a warm climate or ski country, speak now!
2. Enable security on my home wireless network. Sure I preach this to every customer, but I have no less than 8 excuses (2 plausible) as to why I never did this at home. Certain that my open network is contributing to global warming and risking national security - I'm plagued with guilt. In 2008 I will enable security on my 802.11 network.
3. More and better new products. Many, including bossman Don, have asked exactly what it is that B&B pays me to do. Products are the answer. We had a lot of great new products in 2007 and a few that were merely good. We'll make the good ones great and stack on a heap more in 2008. I'll keep you posted on our progress.
So just what did all those busy B&B Engineers do in 2007? It was an eventful year for new products!
