Ancient Stone
Tablets Reveal Ten Commandments of Industrial Ethernet
Oranmore,
Co. Galway, Ireland – Archeologists have
recently unearthed stone tablets etched with the 10 Commandments of
Industrial Ethernet. Sources say they may in fact
be related to the ones brought down from Mount Sinai by the famous
prophet Moses over 3500 years ago.
"This is
an amazing discovery," says Paddy Coyne of B&B Electronics.
"They look very old and venerable, with all the cracks and chips
you'd expect to see after 35 centuries. But the message is unmistakable:
There are certain things you should and should not do when you install
Industrial Ethernet. I think Someone's really looking out for all
the automation engineers out there."
The tablets include
advice on the following topics:
- The difference
between IP addresses for equipment vs. how they're assigned in the
office
- Common security
risks, and simple steps to ensure that systems can't be "hacked",
especially by well-meaning workers inside the company
- The inherent
vulnerabilities of 802.11 networks, and the do's and don'ts of wireless
- Documentation
tips for ensuring that when something fails, it can be quickly and
easily replaced
- Strategies
for integrating 10- and 20- year old devices with new computers
and networks
The stone tablets
are sealed inside of B&B's archeology lab, but the miracle of
the Internet makes it possible for readers to download free PDF copies.
