Isolate and protect your serial equipment
Optical Isolation protects your equipment from dangerous ground loops, spikes and surges.
Ground loops are surges of electricity caused when the grounding points of different pieces of equipment are at different voltage levels, but a data line connects the pieces of equipment. Spikes are voltage fluctuations of very short duration, but of high voltage. Surges are elevated voltage levels of longer duration than spikes.
Any of these misfortunes can scramble data or damage boards. Ground loops, spikes and surges can be stopped by inserting an optical isolation component in the data line. Optical isolation works by changing the electronic data signal to a flash of light from an LED. A photosensitive transistor receives the light, re-powers it and sends it on its way. Since no electricity crosses the optical isolator, only light, your data and equipment are safe.
